John Terry will not be allowed to have a ‘no playing against Chelsea’ clause in his new Aston Villa contract.

Terry is out of contract at the end of next month but if the Villans beat Fulham in the Championship playoff final tomorrow (May 26) then a one-year extension can be triggered.

Manager Steve Bruce is keen to keep the 37-year-old at the club after playing a key role in their run to promotion this season after joining from the Blues last summer.
Terry spent 22 years at Stamford Bridge and specified when he joined Villa that part of the reason he decided to drop down a division was so he wouldn’t face his boyhood team in competitive action.

It was therefore proposed that when the centre-back signed his new deal, it would contain a clause that formally stated he did not have to play against Chelsea.
Yet the Premier League are uncomfortable with this, although that doesn’t mean that Bruce can’t simply not include the Terry in the Villa squad when they face the West Londoners.
