According to the Mirror, John Terry is keen to hire Ashley Cole as part of his managerial staff should he be appointed as Phillip Cocu’s replacement at Derby.

The current assistant to Dean Smith at Aston Villa is a frontrunner for the vacant role at Pride Park, and has another man in his sights as well as Cole to potentially join his backroom staff.

Terry is also eyeing MK Dons assistant boss Luke Williams, again according to the Mirror.

Should Cole end up back at Derby, he will arrive with the approval of Frank Lampard, who praised the 39-year-old’s impact at the club in March 2019.

Specifically, the Chelsea boss pinpointed what Cole offered aside from on-field performances, which suggests to us that he would make a fine member of Terry’s backroom staff.

Lampard told talkSPORT: ‘In terms of being a winner and being around the block and bringing an experience to the group – and we are quite a young group in a lot of ways this year.

‘I just felt that, not just playing-wise because Ashley is always going to be helpful to me playing-wise, but the way he is as someone who is going to help us.’

Cole has been working as a coach in Chelsea’s academy, along with doing punditry work since his retirement from football.

The Mirror add that Wayne Rooney – who is currently the Rams’ interim manager – wants to remain involved in proceedings at the club.

Whatever happens, Derby need to act quickly and decisively.

After 15 games of the Championship season, the Rams sit bottom having won just one game – they are currently five points from safety.
