Tottenham Hotspur reportedly missed out on signing Pietro Pellegri.
According to Calciomercato, Tottenham Hotspur – as well as Juventus – missed out on the signing of then-Genoa striker Pietro Pellegri earlier this year.
Pellegri, 17, has hit the headlines having scored a first goal for Monaco in their 2-1 defeat at Bordeaux on Sunday evening, despite only coming on as a 59th minute substitute.
The Italian teenager has been touted for a huge future; after coming up through the ranks with Genoa, the striker hit three goals in 10 first-team games for his hometown club, and earned a move to Monaco in January.
After three substitute appearances totalling 21 minutes last term, Pellegri already has more playing time to his name this season, and looks set to become a star for club and country.
Now though, Calciomercato report of how it could have all been so different for Pellegri, as two clubs were gazumped by Monaco in the race for his signature last year.
It’s claimed that Tottenham were major players in the race for Pellegri, but he had chosen to sign for Juventus in January instead, before the move fell through and he ended up picking Monaco instead.
Spurs therefore lost out to two clubs in the battle for Pellegri’s signature, and will have been left cursing the furore over his goal on Sunday, as he could have been doing it in a Spurs shirt instead.
Tall, quick and skilful as well as being a good finisher, Pellegri has all the tools to be a top striker in the future, and Spurs would have no doubt loved to have him learning behind Harry Kane instead of having to trudge on with Vincent Janssen and Fernando Llorente at the club.
