Manchester United are reportedly edging closer to securing the signing of Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld.
According to a report from the Sun, Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is determined to wrap up a deal to sign Tottenham ace Toby Alderweireld before the World Cup kicks off in Russia on Thursday.
The Belgian joined Spurs from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2015, for a fee believed to be worth in the region of £11.5 million, and he has since gone on to establish himself as one of the continent’s finest centre-backs.
His future in north London seems to be growing ever more uncertain with every day that passes, however, following a challenging campaign with Tottenham last season.
Davinson Sanchez’s rise to prominence at Spurs seems to have given Mauricio Pochettino the confidence that Alderweireld is far from indispensable, and should they receive a substantial offer for his services, it would be no surprise to see the Lilywhites cash in.
According to a report from the Sun, Manchester United are desperate to finalise a deal for the Belgium international within the next 48 hours.
The British tabloid claim that talks between the two clubs have already begun, with a compromised fee of £50 million close to being agreed, although United want the deal structured in their favour.
Considering the immense size of the potential deal, wrapping everything up before the World Cup begins on Thursday seems to be ambitious to say the least, but with United’s financial firepower, it will be far from impossible.
