Tottenham Hotspur may have to pay £50million if they want to sign Alfie Mawson from Swansea City.

The 24-year-old is being considered by Spurs, along with fellow centre-back Matthijs de Ligt of Ajax, as a replacement for Toby Alderweireld following his expected departure.

Alderweireld is likely to leave the North London club with contract negotiations between the two parties having collapsed over wage demands.
Is Mawson worth it?
While the Englishman has been an impressive figure for the Swans since a 2016 transfer from Brentford, £50m seems like a hugely inflated price.

After all, while Mawson recently received his first call-up to the senior England squad by manager Gareth Southgate he didn’t make it onto the pitch and is still yet to receive his first cap – with Burnley’s James Tarkowski ahead of the Swansea defender in the pecking order.
The Bees academy graduate also only has 58 appearances to his name in the top flight of English football to date, so while a decent prospect spending a club record fee would represent a huge gamble for Tottenham.
