Swansea City are still keen on signing Manchester City academy talent James McAtee, with the Welsh side chasing the youngster for most of the window.
According to Wales Online, the Swans ‘remain interested’ in bringing the teenager to the Championship on loan. Russell Martin’s side have struggled this campaign, with the Welsh club say 17th in the league standings.
And Swansea seem intent on signing McAtee this window. The City youngster has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign with the Manchester giants this campaign. The midfielder has featured sporadically for Pep Guardiola’s side, though the teenager has impressed.
With 17 goals in 18 youth games this season, McAtee is likely to follow the likes of Cola Palmer and Phil Foden into the first team from the academy. And it is this form that has seemingly caught the eye of Swansea this month.
Indeed, Guardiola has already been impressed with what he has seen from McAtee. The Catalan manager labelled the midfielder as ‘exceptional’, and there is a chance that the midfielder could make the leap to the senior side for good next season.
However, whether McAtee leaves for Swansea on loan this season remains to be seen. Whilst the Swans seem keen to sign the youngster, City could decide to keep the teenager in Manchester for the remainder of the campaign.
Foden success could prompt City to reject Swansea move for McAtee
The City academy is starting to bear fruit after years of investment and development, and after the huge success of Foden, it is perhaps not too wild an assumption to make that the club should follow the same path with McAtee as they have for the England international.
After all, there were calls from City fans and neutrals for Foden to go out on loan and play EFL football. However, Guardiola’s plan to keep hold of him and develop him his way has proved a huge success. And the club could repeat this story with McAtee in the coming months.
