Sunderland came agonisingly close to sealing immediate promotion from League One this past season.

According to a report from The Sun on Sunday (2/6; page 59), Sunderland’s incoming owners want to keep Jack Ross in charge despite the Black Cats missing out on promotion to the Championship.
The Sun on Sunday reports that the consortium led by Mark Campbell is expected to complete a deal on June 19. And their arrival may have left some supporters wondering what the future may hold for the current boss.
Ross enjoyed a promising first year in charge at the Stadium of Light. However, an underwhelming run of form at the end of the season dashed their automatic-promotion hopes and left them needing play-off glory to secure an immediate return to the second tier.
But, after overcoming Portsmouth in the semi-final, it was Wembley heartbreak for the Black Cats as Charlton came from behind to book their ticket to the Championship, with the winning goal coming in stoppage-time.

The Sun on Sunday (2/6; page 59) reports that Ross is set to get another chance to deliver promotion however, with the incoming owners reportedly keen to keep the Scot in charge once they get their deal across the line.
Ross’ future may be an issue that divides supporters. Sunderland are clearly too big a club to be in the third tier, and some may think that he had all the tools he needed to get them across the line.

But with the club going through so many significant changes at all levels in the last year or so, Ross definitely deserves some credit given that they came within touching distance of winning promotion.
He now looks set to get another chance to clear that final hurdle.
