Cardiff City are reportedly hoping that they can convince Sunderland to sell Josh Maja in January.

Cardiff are hoping that they can capitalise on Josh Maja’s contract situation and convince Sunderland to sell the striker in January, according to a report from The Sun on Sunday (23/12; page 61).
Maja has enjoyed a superb season at the Stadium of Light, scoring 13 goals in 25 games in all competitions. But his Black Cats future looks to be uncertain.
The 19-year-old’s deal expires in the summer, according to The Sun on Sunday (23/12; page 61), and Sunderland risk losing him for a compensation fee at the end of the campaign.
Cardiff are keen on the teenager, and Neil Warnock may look to agree a deal next month to try and see off the competition for Maja’s signature.

It is not clear whether Maja is currently planning to leave the club when his deal expires, or whether he would be willing to extend his contract with Sunderland.
But even if he is determined to leave the club in the summer, it would arguably be a sensible decision to keep hold of him until his contract expires.

Sunderland are in the promotion race, but their chances of going up will surely take a hit if they sell one of the most lethal strikers in the division when the window opens.
Unless Cardiff’s offer is a remarkable one, it is surely the smart option to keep hold of Maja until the summer in the hope that he can fire the club back to the Championship – even if that means losing him for a tribunal fee.
