According to a report from The Sun on Sunday (7/7; page 61), Sunderland face a fight to keep Aiden McGeady this summer, with the winger attracting MLS attention and keen to try his hand in America.

McGeady has won many of the Black Cats supporters over after a difficult first year at the Stadium of Light which ended with the club being relegated to League One.

The winger took home a number of accolades as Jack Ross’ men came agonisingly close to sealing an immediate return to the Championship, including the Fans’ Player of the Season award.

But it appears that Sunderland may need to fend off interest if they want to keep the 33-year-old during this window. The Sun on Sunday (7/7; page 61) reports that McGeady is interested in playing in MLS before the end of his career, and now wanted by a number of sides after word of his desire to play stateside got out.

The report notes that the Black Cats have little interest in letting McGeady go, but also hints that the decision may made be slightly tougher by the fact that he is one of the club’s highest earners.

McGeady is at a stage in his career where Sunderland should find it extremely difficult to turn down a substantial bid. But as long as they can afford to keep him and he is happy to stay, there seems to be little reason why the club should have any interest in making it easy for another side to lure him away.
