Report: Sunderland’s Adam Richardson on Manchester United’s radar

Sunderland starlet Adam Richardson is a target for Manchester United, according to reports.

Manchester United are eyeing a £500,000 move for Sunderland’s young goalkeeper Adam Richardson, according to a report from The Sun on Sunday (07/10; page 60).

The England under-15 international is being viewed as one of the brightest talents coming through a Sunderland academy that has produced some excellent players in recent years, including Jordan Pickford.

The Sun on Sunday (07/10; page 60) reports that Manchester United are eyeing a move for the 15-year-old in the hope that he could follow in Pickford’s footsteps after they missed out on the England stopper who is now plying his trade with Everton.

The report adds that the Red Devils are looking to pay £500,000 for Richardson – who was born less than a week before two Ruud van Nistelrooy goals gave United a 2-0 win away at Charlton, while Kevin Kyle and Marcus Stewart helped the Black Cats beat Crystal Palace 2-1 in the First Division on the same day in 2003.

It says a lot about how highly United rate Richardson that they are reportedly willing to pay the six-figure fee to sign him in the future. It is always a gamble to sign players at that age, and while £500,000 is not a lot of money to the Premier League side, it is still a risk to make that move.

And it is a risk for Richardson to head to Old Trafford. His path to the first-team should be much clearer at the Stadium of Light, and there may well be plenty of people around him telling him that staying put could be the better decision at this stage of his career.
