Jon Taylor is leaving Rotherham United but will he join League One Sunderland or Championship pair Barnsley and Luton Town?
Jon Taylor could be on his way to Sunderland after suffering relegation from the Championship with Rotherham United, according to TEAMtalk.
The Liverpool-born 26-year-old scored four goals in the second tier last season and he is now set to part ways with The Millers. Taylor’s contract expires at the end of the month, though he should not struggle to find a new club.
Barnsley and Luton Town, who are heading back to the Championship after finishing first and second in League One, are interested – meaning Sunderland face a challenge as they look to lure the winger of the Stadium of Light.
Unlike Barnsley and Luton, Sunderland will be playing in England’s third tier again in 2019/20.
Taylor’s speed and directness would certainly enhance a Black Cats attack which stuttered in the second half of the season after Josh Maja’s January move to Bordeaux. A lack of firepower cost Sunderland in both the Checkatrade and the play-off finals this year.
Rotherham paid a club-record fee to sign Taylor from Peterborough United in three years ago with then-manager Alan Stubbs, who himself played for Sunderland in 2005/06, raving about the jet-heeled forward’s potential.
“He is a very dynamic footballer who has got an eye for a goal. He is also a creative player and I think that he will be an excellent addition to the squad,” Stubbs said.
“He is very quick, he looks like he enjoys taking defenders on which is great to see. I think he will be a very exciting player.”
