Report: Sunderland want Michael O’Neill to be their next manager

Sunderland are keen to appoint Michael O’Neill as their next manager.

According to the Daily Mail, Michael O’Neill has emerged as Sunderland’s top target for their managerial job – after reports suggested that Paul Heckingbottom was closing in on being appointed at the Stadium of Light.

It was claimed that Heckingbottom was set to leave Barnsley to join Sunderland by The Sun yesterday, with the 44-year-old offered a huge pay rise by the Black Cats.

However, the Mail suggest that O’Neill is now Sunderland’s top target.

Although Sunderland are still interested in Heckingbottom, they feel that O’Neill could be an excellent appointment, as they look to avoid the drop in the Championship.

O’Neill has worked wonders in charge of Northern Ireland, but he was unable to get the nation to the World Cup.

Northern Ireland were beaten by Switzerland in a World Cup qualifying play off yesterday, and there is a feeling that he could move on now.

Sunderland are currently bottom of the Championship, and whether they would have the pulling power to attract the in-demand boss remains to be seen.
