Sunderland are reportedly looking to bring Kevin Phillips back to the club.
According to The Sun, Sunderland want to make club hero Kevin Phillips their new manager this summer after the sacking of Chris Coleman.
The Black Cats have endured a torrid season in the Championship, as whilst they were supposed to stabilised under Simon Grayson after relegation from the Premier League, they have ended up being relegated again under Coleman.
Coleman took over from Grayson back in November, but hasn’t seen out the season as his decision to quit his post as Wales manager has been brought into question after a thankless job at the Stadium of Light.
Coleman’s sacking wasn’t the only news on Sunday, as owner Ellis Short finally sold the club, with Stewart Donald set to take the reins – and he wants an appointment that fans can get behind.
The Sun report that Donald now wants former Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips to become the club’s new manager this summer, which would mark an emotional return to the Stadium of Light for the 44-year-old.
Phillips joined Sunderland from Watford back in 1997, and hit 130 goals in 235 games for the Black Cats, finishing as the Premier League’s top goalscorer in the 1999-2000 season with 30 goals in just 36 games.
Now a coach at Derby County, Phillips may look to take his first steps into management, and being handed the task of rebuilding the club is most famous for playing for may be appealing.
