Sunderland reportedly want Diego Contento to replace Crystal Palace target Patrick van Aanholt in the January transfer window.

Sunderland are interested in signing Diego Contento from Bordeaux in the January transfer window, according to The Times.

It has been reported that Sunderland want to secure the services of the defender on a loan deal.

According to the report, signing the former Bayern Munich left-back would allow the Black Cats to sell Patrick van Aanholt to Crystal Palace.

Sky Sports recently reported of Palace’s interest in the 26-year-old Sunderland left-back.

Contento has been on the books of French club Bordeaux since 2014 following his departure from German giants Bayern with whom he won the Bundesliga thrice and the Champions League in 2012-13.

The former Germany Under-20 international has featured in 13 Ligue 1 matches so far this season, creating three chances in the process.

Sunderland are struggling in the Premier League at the moment and are in real danger of getting relegated to the Championship at the end of the season.

David Moyes’s side are currently at the foot of the league table with 15 points from 22 matches, three points behind 17th-placed Swansea City.

Meanwhile, Bordeaux find themselves ninth in Ligue 1 at the moment with 29 points from 21 matches.
