Sunderland are reportedly keen to rival Aberdeen for Greg Stewart.
According to The Scottish Sun, Sunderland have joined the unexpected battle for Birmingham City forward Greg Stewart.
Stewart, 28, was sent out on loan by Birmingham over the summer, joining Kilmarnock – and he has been in superb form at Rugby Park.
The former Dundee man has hit eight goals in 16 games this term, becoming a fan favourite at Kilmarnock before Birmingham surprisingly recalled him last week.
It now seems that the Blues intend to sell Stewart on, and whilst Aberdeen – the club Stewart spent last season on loan with – are keen, they’re not alone.
The Scottish Sun now claim that Sunderland have joined the race to sign Stewart, and could offer him ‘lucrative’ wages to pick a move to the Stadium of Light.
Birmingham allegedly want to recoup some of the £400,000 they spent on Stewart, and Sunderland may at least be able to give them a certain portion of that.
Sunderland boss Jack Ross should be familiar with Stewart from Scottish football, and his form in Scotland this season suggests that he could help Sunderland’s push for promotion back to the Championship.
Stewart has been playing out wide or off the striker at Kilmarnock, so whilst he isn’t necessarily an out-and-out striker, he could provide goals and creativity to this Sunderland side if Ross can secure a deal.
