Sunderland are reportedly looking to offload a number of players this summer.
According to The Sun, Sunderland will attempt to offload a host of players this summer – and will look to persuade Lamine Kone, Didier Ndong and Aiden McGeady to leave.
The Black Cats were hoping to rebuild after their relegation from the Premier League last season, but the appointment of Simon Grayson didn’t last long, and their season has lurched from one disaster to the next.
Sunderland now sit in the Championship relegation zone and are edging towards relegation given that they lie seven points adrift of safety, with a second successive relegation on the cards.
That would leave Sunderland with an even bigger rebuilding job, and some big earners would need to depart this summer, with three players already being lined up for the Stadium of Light exit door.
The Sun report that Sunderland want to persuade defender Lamine Kone, midfielder Didier Ndong and winger Aiden McGeady to leave the club this summer, in the hope of getting them off the wage bill.
Defender Kone was a star under Sam Allardyce following his January 2016 move from Lorient, but struggled after a move to Everton fell through, with the Ivorian making a host of errors in the Championship and looking like a shadow of his former self.
Midfielder Ndong – another signing from Lorient – has shown flashes of quality for Sunderland, earning the 23-year-old a January loan move to Watford, but he has yet to make an appearance, with a permanent move looking unlikely.
Meanwhile, winger McGeady was a key signing for former boss Grayson having worked together at Preston last season, and whilst he has notched seven goals and four assists, he is one of the club’s biggest earners and certainly wouldn’t want to play in League One.
