Karanka is currently out of work, following his dismissal from Middlesbrough earlier this year, while Heckingbottom is in charge at Barnsley.
Sunderland could face the complication of having to pay complication for Heckingbottom, if they do make an approach for the Tykes boss.
Sunderland are currently bottom of the Championship table, after winning just one league match all season.
