Sunderland boss Chris Coleman appears to be taking no time to identify January targets, with Liverpool pair Danny Ward and Ben Woodburn on his list.

Coleman’s appointment at the Stadium of Light was only confirmed at the weekend, but he has taken little time to identify two targets for the winter, with the Sunderland Echo reporting that the Welshman wants to sign Danny Ward and Ben Woodburn on loan.

Coleman handed both men their international debuts during his time as Wales boss, so it is perhaps no surprise that they seem to have emerged as potential targets as he looks to make the best out of a bleak situation at Sunderland.
Ward has endured a frustrating season having failed to move ahead of Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius in the pecking order at Anfield; and having been a part of the Huddersfield Town side that secured promotion last season, you would imagine that he would be keen to temporarily leave Merseyside to get some first-team football under his belt.

Meanwhile, Woodburn has also struggled for game-time for the Reds, making just one appearance this term, while his other five outings this season have come for Wales.
It was for his country that Woodburn made a massive impact this season, scoring a stunning late winner in the World Cup qualifier with Austria back in September.
Given Sunderland’s current position in the Championship table, it would undoubtedly be a coup for the Black Cats if they managed to land the pair – especially as it is not clear if they are even available and the Echo reports that Coleman will have limited resources to work with until the summer so it is difficult to think of many better targets potentially available to him.
If Sunderland manage to keep in touch with the sides just above the relegation zone in the second tier going into January, landing Ward and Woodburn would undoubtedly provide the kind of boost that will give them the belief that they can pull themselves away from trouble this season before looking to rebuild in the summer.
