Guillermo Varela has barely featured in Manchester United colours and Sunderland, even without David Moyes, will offer him a fresh start.

David Moyes’ disastrous reign as Sunderland manager may have been brought to a typically sticky end over a month ago but it appears that the club are making an intriguing attempt to sign a player the put-upon Scot knows well.

According to The Chronicle, forgotten Manchester United prospect Guillermo Varela is on the Black Cats’ radar – the Uruguayan famously renowned as Moyes’ first signing during his ill-fated spell at Old Trafford in 2013/14.

However, it’s fair to say Varela’s career hasn’t quite gone to plan since he earned a move to Manchester, signing from Penarol after standing out at the South American championships.

The defender, now 24 years of age, has only featured 11 times in United colours since Moyes was given the boot eight months after his appointment.

Most recently, Varela spent a season on loan at Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga but his deal was cut short after a tattoo, which he was advised by the club doctors not to get, became infected, causing him to miss the DFB Pokal final against Borussia Dortmund.

However, it appears that Sunderland are willing to give Varela another chance to prove himself and kick-start a stuttering career. Ironically, however, the right back position is one of the few areas in the squad not short on numbers.

Billy Jones was one of the club’s more consistent players in 2016/17 while Donald Love, another Manchester United reject, acts as a back-up option.

Therefore, Varela is hardly the kind of signing that would get supporters’ pulses racing after what has been a dissatisfying start to the summer window.
