Aiden McGeady left out of Everton’s pre-season squad as Sunderland transfer moves ever nearer.

Aiden McGeady has been left out of Everton’s 25-man squad for a pre-season tour of Tanzania as his expected move to Sunderland draws closer, reports the Sunderland Echo.

The Black Cats have agreed a fee and personal terms with McGeady, but a contractual issue between the player and the Toffees needs to be resolved before the deal can be finalised.

However, the Republic of Ireland international’s exclusion from the touring party suggests that it shouldn’t be too long before he is confirmed as a new signing at the Stadium of Light.

The move will bring a three-and-a-half year stay at Goodison Park to an end for McGeady, who has been told by manager Ronald Koeman that he is not in his plans and is free to leave.

After impressing on loan at Preston North End last season with eight goals and nine assists in 34 Championship games, it was reported by the BBC that the Lancashire club were looking to sign the 31-year-old permanently.

Yet Simon Grayson’s subsequent switch from Preston to become Sunderland manager has seen McGeady’s next destination change as well.
