Sunderland are struggling to reach a deal for Middlesbrough’s Ashley Fletcher, as they cannot afford his wages.

Sunderland have been linked with a move for Fletcher, with Chris Coleman’s side thought to be attempting to take the striker on loan.
However, Sunderland face competition from Norwich City for the forward, and that could put them out of the running.

Norwich are said to be likely to be able to afford to pay Fletcher’s wages in full, which Sunderland are unable to on their restricted budget.
The Black Cats have a very limited amount of money to spend this month, and have struggled to get additions over the line so far this month.

Fletcher has not featured much for Boro since signing last summer, but Boro would only consider selling him on a permanent deal if they could get back all the money they paid for him six months ago.
Sunderland are unable to be able to afford that £6.5 million fee, and it may be that signing him on loan will also prove too complicated for Coleman’s side.
