Fabbrini left Championship side Birmingham on loan in January, and could be playing in the second tier for Sunderland next season.
Diego Fabbrini scores for Middlesbrough
Sunderland scout Gordon Chisholm was sent to watch Spezia’s Diego Fabbrini in action this weekend, Di Marzio reports.
Fabbrini, who is currently on loan to the Italian Serie B side from Birmingham City, played 63 minutes of Saturday’s 3-1 home defeat at the hands of Benevento, in which he failed to score or assist and was booked midway through the first half.
The former Italy international recently admitted that a lack of Italy in his life is what fuelled his decision to return to his homeland in January, having fallen out of favour at St Andrew’s.
And a return to English football is therefore likely to be low on Fabbrini’s list of preferred destinations when his current loan deal expires.
Nevertheless, a move to Sunderland, where compatriots Vito Mannone and Fabio Borini are currently employed, could appeal to the 26-year-old should no offers from Italy arrive.
Fabbrini first arrived on these shores with Watford in 2013, before temporary spells at Siena, Millwall, Birmingham and Middlesbrough and a permanent move to the Blues early last year.
However, the former Udinese player has largely flattered to deceive since leaving Italy, and has scored or created 12 goals in 83 Championship appearances.
Sunderland look destined to be playing their football in the second tier next season, with Saturday’s defeat to Watford leaving them eight points adrift of safety.
Would Fabbrini be a good signing for Sunderland?
