Sunderland are taking a look at Blackburn Rovers utility man Charlie Mulgrew, as Simon Grayson desperately tries to turn the Black Cats’ fortunes around.

The Black Cats have endured a fairly miserable start to the season since falling into the Championship. Their 1-1 draw with Hull City on Saturday has left them just one place and two points above the bottom three in the table.

And with no league win since the second weekend of the season, it appears that Grayson’s men could be in danger of finding themselves in another relegation scrap.
One player who Grayson appears to think could help Sunderland try and turn their campaign around is Blackburn stalwart Mulgrew, who is enjoying a very good season at Ewood Park.

The former Celtic man is Rovers’ joint top goalscorer in League One with three strikes for Tony Mowbray’s men despite generally playing across the defence or in the centre of midfield.
The Sun on Sunday (print edition; 17th September 2017; page 63) reports that Grayson is an admirer of Mulgrew’s leadership qualities and feels that that is an attribute that his current squad lacks, and is thus, considering making a move for the Scotland international during the January transfer window.
