Sunderland are in talks to sign Scottish Premiership forward Ross Stewart from Ross County, with The Sun reporting a deal for the soon to be out of contract attacker could cost just £500,000.

The Black Cats have shown glimpses of brilliance in the early weeks of the Lee Johnson era – battering promotion favourites Lincoln 4-0 before putting three past AFC Wimbledon. However, for the most part a lack of attacking invention continues to undermine their promotion prospects.

Johnson, of course, is determined to change that as soon as possible.

The former Bristol City boss admitted after the 1-0 win at Ipswich Town that he’s keen to bring in a new face or two before Monday’s transfer deadline.

£3 million misfit Will Grigg could be sold to raise funds, while struggling summer signing Danny Graham could also depart in the next few days.

And, according to The Sun, talks are under way regarding a deal that would see a 24-year-old centre-forward arrive to compete with the in-form Charlie Wyke at the Stadium of Light.

Stewart is out of contract in the summer and is therefore available for a cut-price fee.

“It is evident Ross won’t be here next year but I have a real feeling coming from him that he wants to be part of keeping this club in the Premiership,” Ross County boss John Hughes explains.

“He seems quite happy to be here for the rest of the season, as would we be. But if a club comes in with a bid of £500,000, we have a decision to make.”

Stewart has reached double figures in each of the last four seasons, while netting six times in 24 matches in 2020/21.
