Coventry City and Birmingham have both held talks with the agent of Tom Flanagan as the out-of-contract Sunderland future considers his future, according to the Northern Echo.
Before the 2019/20 League One season was brought to a premature conclusion in March, an experienced centre-back was in the midst of arguably his best run of form in a Black Cats shirt.
Flanagan had started each of Sunderland’s last eight games before the campaign paused, keeping clean sheets in four of those to boot.
But in a cruel twist of fate for the Wearside giants (and they are used to cruel twists of fate, make no mistake) the Northern Ireland international might have played his final game in red and white back in March.
Flanagan’s contract is due to expire next week.
And while Phil Parkinson would absolutely love to keep him around, especially after Alim Ozturk and Bailey Wright departed earlier this month.
But the decision is out of his hands and resting solely on Flanagan’s shoulders.
While Sunderland are consigned to yet another year in the thorns and the thistles of third-tier football, Birmingham and Coventry (who are actually renting St Andrews off the Blues) will be playing in the Championship when 2020/21.
Coventry actually won the League One title despite their myriad of off-field issues.
