Sunderland are reportedly closing in on Bury striker James Vaughan.

According to The Chronicle, Sunderland are closing in on a deal for Bury striker James Vaughan as Simon Grayson attempts to boost his squad this summer.

The Black Cats appointed Grayson as their new manager last month, and he has already tied up two signings in Everton defenders Brendan Galloway and Tyias Browning.

With Sunderland looking to rebuild following relegation from the Premier League, Grayson must bring in more new signings this summer, and a new striker has to be a top priority.

Jermain Defoe has moved on to Bournemouth and Victor Anichebe has joined Beijing Enterprises, meaning that Grayson must sign a new striker – and Bury’s James Vaughan has emerged as a top target.

The Chronicle report that Sunderland are close to agreeing a deal to sign Vaughan, with a fee somewhere close to £1million being paid to the League One side for his services.

Vaughan, 28, hit 24 goals in 40 games in all appearances for Bury last season, having joined the club on a free transfer from Birmingham City, where he had failed to score in his 17 appearances.

Vaughan has already played under Grayson in his career having been signed on loan by the new Sunderland boss in the summer of 2012 at Huddersfield, and a reunion now appears to be close.

The former Everton man’s Championship record is patchy, but he excelled with Bury last season, and could provide goals for Sunderland after Defoe’s move to Bournemouth.
