Report: Sunderland make loan bid for Celtic’s Lewis Morgan

Celtic have reportedly not accepted Sunderland’s loan offer, but have not shut the door on the idea either.

According to a report from The Scottish Sun, Sunderland boss Jack Ross has made a loan bid for Lewis Morgan as he prepares for his first season at the Stadium of Light, but has been told by Celtic that they will not make a decision on the 21-year-old’s immediate future until mid-July at the earliest.

Morgan is currently gearing up for his first campaign with the Hoops having signed in January before returning to spend the second-half of the season with former club St Mirren. There he worked alongside Ross, and the new Black Cats boss is reportedly eyeing a reunion with the winger.

The Scottish Sun reports that Sunderland have made a loan bid for the youngster, but the League One newcomers have been informed by the Scottish Premiership champions that Morgan is set to be given the chance to stake a claim to force his way into Brendan Rodgers’s plans for next season and thus, mid-July is the earliest that they can expect a decision on his future.

The Bhoys will be hoping that their current wide options will step up during the current campaign with Patrick Roberts returning to Manchester City after his second loan spell with the club, and Roberts’s exit may well leave the door open for Morgan to make an immediate impact at Parkhead.

Ross may be hoping however, that Rodgers will decide that Morgan’s development would benefit from another loan spell. The winger was superb in guiding St Mirren to the Scottish Championship title this past season, scoring 14 league goals and providing six assists.

League One will be a tougher task than Scotland’s second tier, but Morgan clearly has the potential to be the kind of signing that could inspire Sunderland as they look to bounce back at the first attempt, so the next month or so could be extremely frustrating for Ross as he awaits an answer from the Hoops to their loan offer.
