Wigan Athletic striker Will Grigg is wanted by Sunderland.
According to The Northern Echo, Sunderland have made a first bid for Wigan Athletic striker Will Grigg as they attempt to secure his signature.
The Black Cats are expected to confirm Burnley’s Jimmy Dunne as their first signing today, with the Irish defender nearing a move to the Stadium of Light.
However, Sunderland remain keen on other additions, particularly further up the pitch as they look to score the goals to win promotion back to the Championship.
Charlie Wyke is back from injury, but with Josh Maja’s future up in the air, it’s no surprise that Sunderland are working hard to get a striker in during this month’s transfer window – even if it may not be directly linked to a Maja sale.
Now, The Northern Echo report that Sunderland have submitted a first offer for Wigan’s Grigg, which would most likely be a loan deal with a view to a permanent move.
Grigg, 27, has been in and out of the Wigan side this season, but has scored four times in the Championship whilst also picking up one assist.
The Northern Ireland international has almost earned a reputation as being too good for League One but not good enough as a top Championship striker given his record in recent years.
Grigg’s last three League One campaigns have seen him score 64 goals, and his last full Championship season garnered just five goals in the 2016-17 campaign.
That shouldn’t be an issue for Sunderland given that it’s goals they want right now, but whether they would be wise to spend big on a permanent deal if they go up is another matter.
