Report: Sunderland join Glen Kamara chase amid Rangers, Celtic links

Glasgow Rangers have reportedly had a look at bringing the midfielder to Ibrox in recent months, while Sunderland have now joined the race.

According to a report from the Daily Mail, Sunderland have become the latest club to take an interest in Glen Kamara, who has attracted attention from the likes of Rangers and Celtic in recent months.

Rangers and Celtic have both had a chance to look at Kamara up close since the start of last season, with the 22-year-old moving to the Scottish Premiership to join Dundee following his release by Arsenal.

The Mail reports that the Gers and Hoops have had the Finland international on their radar recently. But the Old Firm pair are definitely not the only sides who have been keen on signing Kamara – it is not entirely clear whether they remain interested – with Wolves, Derby County and Burnley all monitoring his situation.

And the Mail adds that Sunderland have joined the race to sign Kamara. Jack Ross’ men have made a very promising start to life in League One, but could probably do with adding to their options in the middle of the park with Jack Rodwell and Didier Ndong among those to have left the Stadium of Light in recent months.

Should Sunderland fear Rangers and Celtic links?

With it not exactly clear how keen Rangers and Celtic are on signing Kamara, Sunderland may not feel too easy about their potential pursuit of the youngster when the January window opens.

Both Rangers and Celtic could be able to offer European football after the winter if they progress out of their respective Europa League groups, and Kamara is already aware of the competition that the Gers and Hoops face on a weekly basis, and he can be confident that he could make an impact at either Parkhead or Ibrox.

But Celtic are certainly not short of options in the middle of the park – both Youssouf Mulumbu and Callum McGregor proved in the two games before the international break that they are capable of providing cover for Scott Brown – while Rangers also appear to be in a strong position.

Ross McCrorie has impressed in a holding role, while loanee Lassana Coulibaly is arguably threatening to make himself a key summer target for Steven Gerrard’s side.

Neither Rangers or Celtic appear to desperately need Kamara in their side, but with both facing Dundee in December, perhaps a great performance against either of the Old Firm could have an impact on how many offers Kamara has to respond to in January, and how difficult it is for Sunderland to get something done.

But his contract situation certainly could give the Black Cats a potential advantage. The Mail reports that his deal expires in the summer, and while Dundee could choose to cash in in January, he could agree a pre-contract deal with foreign clubs, so Sunderland could perhaps sneak in ahead of some of their potential rivals.
