Sunderland are reportedly interested in signing Pedro Carneiro on a free transfer.

Sunderland are interested in signing Pedro Carneiro, according to The Sun.

It has been reported by the British tabloid that the 18-year-old Portuguese midfielder has been with Sunderland for a few days.

The former Manchester City prospect is reportedly trying to win a contract with the Black Cats.

Carneiro, who started his career at City, is a free agent at the moment and is also wanted by Portuguese giants Benfica, according to The Sun.

Sunderland have made a disappointing start to the season and look set to fight for survival in the Premier League yet again.

David Moyes’s side are at the foot of the league table at the moment with just a point from six matches.

While Carneiro is a talented and promising young player and he does have experience of English football, he is unlikely to be a massive help to the Black Cats at the moment.

What Sunderland need more than anything else is a proven goalscorer who can help Jermain Defoe.

Fabio Borini is injured at the moment, but the former Liverpool striker is not very prolific, and neither is Victor Anichebe, who joined the Black Cats earlier this month on a free transfer.
