Sunderland tried to sign Domagoj Vida in the summer transfer window.

Sunderland identified Vida as a possible target in the summer transfer window, but they failed to get a deal over the line.

The Black Cats struggled to do deals for players in the previous transfer window, but the Wearsiders realise that they cannot afford to get things wrong again in January.

Sunderland have failed to win any of their first 10 Premier League matches, and they are already seven points adrift of safety.

David Moyes has stressed how much he wants to add quality to Sunderland’s squad, and Vida is reportedly one of his targets.

Sunderland have been scouting the 27-year-old in recent weeks, and they are expected to submit a bid in January.

If Vida does move to Sunderland he will be in competition with the likes of Lamine Kone, Papy Djilobodji and John O’Shea for a first-team place.
