According to Sunderland Echo, Sunderland are in advanced talks to sign Bury forward Chris Maguire as Jack Roos looks to get recruitment started.

The Black Cats are attempting to embrace a new era this summer having seen Stewart Donald take over the club and bring in St. Mirren’s Jack Ross as the club’s new manager.

Having suffered a second successive relegation, Sunderland need to rebound from dropping into League One, and Ross is now starting to home in on new signings.

The Sunderland Echo report that Sunderland are in advanced talks to sign Hibernian midfielder Dylan McGeouch and AFC Wimbledon striker Lyle Taylor, as well as Bury forward Chris Maguire.

Maguire, 29, made his name in his native Scotland with Aberdeen, scoring 24 goals in 158 games to earn a move to England – but his time south of the border has been somewhat nomadic.

The forward, who can play behind a striker or out wide, has turned out for Derby County, Portsmouth, Sheffield Wednesday, Coventry City, Rotherham United, Oxford United and now Bury, where he signed a two-year contract last summer.

Maguire hit two goals and one assist in 29 games for Bury last season, and whilst he has one year left at Gigg Lane, Sunderland are now making moves to land him this summer.

It’s unclear just how much Bury would demand for Maguire, but Ross – who may well want Maguire having seen him emerge in Scotland – is seemingly on the verge of landing a proven League One forward for his Sunderland side.
