Sunderland have held talks over re-signing Ellis Simms.
The Northern Echo have reported that the two parties are in discussions over a return to Wearside, however a final decision is yet to be made by Everton.
Simms spent the first half of last season with Sunderland, netting seven goals in 17 matches in the Championship.
However, the striker was abruptly recalled from his loan spell in January and he went onto make only two starts for the Toffees.

Sky Sports’ Alan Myers recently revealed that the Black Cats remain interested in Simms alongside Ipswich Town, however no bid had been made.
Today’s report confirms that Sunderland are putting their plan into action in the hope of reuniting with the 22-year-old, though Everton remain uncertain over whether they will let him leave permanently.
Sean Dyche’s side would be left with only Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Neal Maupay up front, meaning they could look to sign Simms’ replacement before he can leave Goodison Park.
Sunderland’s pursuit of Ellis Simms could become very long-winded
It already feels like Sunderland have been chasing Ellis Simms for a very long time, having made their desire to see him return to the Stadium of Light clear back in January.
However, Everton don’t seem to be in a rush to make a decision over their academy product.

If the Toffees are going to wait it out until they have bolstered their attack, then the Black Cats could be left hanging until transfer deadline day closes in.
While Tony Mowbray and the fanbase would love to see Simms back at the club, they don’t want to get caught up in a saga and risk losing out on other potential targets.
If a deal doesn’t look to be on the cards anytime soon then Sunderland need to bite the bullet and look elsewhere.
