Jack Ross’s Sunderland are reportedly battling Championship duo Barnsley and Luton Town for Rotherham United’s Jon Taylor.
Sunderland have identified Rotherham United winger Jon Taylor as Lewis Morgan’s replacement and have held talks over a potential deal, according to the Northern Echo.
Jack Ross’ Black Cats are embarking upon a crucial transfer window after missing out on a return to the Championship thanks to a 94th minute Patrick Bauer goal in the League One play-off final defeat to Charlton Athletic last month.
With Morgan returning to Celtic after a hit-and-miss loan spell at the Stadium of Light, the Wearside giants are in need of a new body in the wide areas.
And it seems that Taylor is the man they have identified as the Scott’s successor.
The Northern Echo claims that Sunderland have held talks with the 26-year-old, who is set to leave Rotherham on a free transfer at the end of the month.
Like Morgan, Taylor is something of an old-school throwback who loves nothing more than running at defenders and using his lightning pace to his advantage. The former Peterborough United ace scored four Championship goals last season.
But with the Northern Echo adding that both Barnsley and Luton Town are keen too, Sunderland have a real challenge on their hands. Barnsley and Luton both beat Ross’ sides to promotion last season after all.
Sunderland, however, are by far the biggest of the three clubs and the possibility of playing at the Stadium of Light should appeal to Taylor.
