Sunderland are reportedly keen on Barnsley boss Daniel Stendel.
According to The Chronicle, Sunderland have made first contact with Daniel Stendel about becoming their new manager following Jack Ross’s departure.
The Black Cats lost 2-0 at Lincoln City on Saturday afternoon, leaving them sixth in the League One table, already eight points adrift of Ipswich Town in top spot.
Ross will have been hoping for a response in Tuesday’s Checkatrade Trophy clash with Grimsby Town, but ended up being sacked just hours before kick off.
Sunderland must now look for a replacement, and it’s believed that they have held discussions with Stendel about taking the job, just a day after he left Barnsley.
The 45-year-old guided Barnsley to promotion from League One last season, playing a fine brand of attacking football with high energy and pressing.
However, Barnsley lost key players such as Adam Davies, Ethan Pinnock, Liam Lindsay and Kieffer Moore over the summer, and the replacements haven’t been good enough.
Saturday’s 5-1 thrashing at Preston left Barnsley mired in the Championship relegation zone, and they parted ways with the German on Tuesday morning.
Talks so soon after his own exit and Ross’s departure suggest Sunderland are very keen on a deal and Stendel appears interested too, making him the frontrunner at this early stage.
