Adam’s Stoke City contract expires in the summer and Sunderland are reportedly keen to take advantage.

Sunderland have entered the race to sign Stoke City midfielder Charlie Adam this month, according to the Sun.

Adam’s contract expires in the summer, although Stoke are said to have the option to extend it by a further 12 months.

The Scottish midfielder has featured regularly in recent weeks, however that will not deter Sunderland it seems, while Turkish giants Fenerbahce – whose manager Dick Advocaat was in charge of Rangers during Adam’s time in the club’s youth ranks – have also been linked with a move this week.

Patrick van Aanholt’s expected sale to Crystal Palace is set to provide Black Cats boss David Moyes with funds to add to his injury-hit squad, and the latter’s interest in Adam is perhaps no surprise considering he tried to bring him to Everton five years ago (Daily Mirror).

Even if Stoke were willing to part with Adam however, Sunderland may struggle to prise the 31-year-old away from the north west, where he has resided since leaving Rangers for Blackpool in 2009, while the Mackems’ current position at the foot of the Premier League table may also act as a deterrent.

Would Adam be a good signing for Sunderland?
