McInnes turned down the chance to join Sunderland yesterday, with the 45-year-old deciding to stay with Aberdeen.
And the Black Cats are said to have no contingency plan, as they felt McInnes would take the job at the Stadium of Light.
Sunderland will now have to start their managerial search from scratch again, and the Mail report it could take weeks before a new boss is put in place.
At the moment Preston North End boss Simon Grayson is the bookies’ favourite to take over at Sunderland.
However, an appointment is believed to be a long way off, with Sunderland fans likely to have to be patient once again.
If Sunderland do take their time over searching for another candidate to take over on Wearside, it could be a big set back for next season.
The Black Cats are already in danger of being left behind by some of their Championship rivals, who have been preparing for the new campaign for some time.
