Sunderland are at risk of being outbid in the race to sign Mateo Bajamich, with MLS outfit Houston Dynamo making an offer of around £1 million according to Mundo la Voz.

It was the same old sorry story for the Wearside giants on Saturday.

The 2020/21 season begun the same way the 2019/20 one ended – amid a familiar sense of disappointment and a nagging feeling of what might have been.

Will Grigg was tortuously denied two goals by the linesman’s offside flag during that EFL Cup exit to Hull City.

The £4 million striker even missed from the spot during the penalty shoot-out, adding to the growing sense that his Sunderland career was doomed as soon as a panicked Stuart Donald picked up the phone on January 31 2019.

Black Cats boss Phil Parkinson has made it clear that he wants attacking reinforcements as Sunderland look to make their third season in League One their last.

But, with Danny Graham’s wages proving prohibitive, finances could stop the north east giants landing their left-field alternative option too.

Houston Dynamo have offered around £1 million for Insituto forward Bajamich, a little-known Argentine who managed nine goals in 28 games last season. That is double the £500,000 bid put on the table by Sunderland (Echo).

What’s more, the 21-year-old is allegedly keen on a move to Texas.

As it stands, put-upon Sunderland fans will have no choice but to hope and pray that Grigg turns things round sooner rather than later.
