Sunderland and Sheffield Wednesday are both said to be eyeing the former Middlesbrough manager.
Sunderland have contacted Aitor Karanka about succeeding Simon Grayson at the Stadium of Light, but they could face competition from Sheffield Wednesday for the former Middlesbrough manager, according to the Sun.
Karanka left Middlesbrough in March but is said to want to continue in English football, having remained at his Harrogate base – which is almost equidistant to Sunderland and Sheffield.
The report claims the Basque coach has been identified as the man to steady the ship at Sunderland, who are facing successive relegations, and is seriously considering what the Mackems have to say.
However, it adds that Sheffield Wednesday are also monitoring his situation, as they weigh up Carlos Carvalhal’s position.
The 14th-placed Owls ended a run of three games without a win against Millwall on Tuesday, but have difficult games against Aston Villa and Bristol City up next.
And according to the Sun, Sunderland will have to step up their interest in order to stay ahead of Wednesday in the hunt for Karanka’s signature, should Carvalhal’s reign be brought to an end.
