Sunderland are one of the Championship sides keen on signing Newcastle United midfielder Jack Colback in January.

According to a report from TEAMtalk, Sunderland are amongst the Championship sides interested in a January move for Newcastle outcast Jack Colback, with Derby County and Leeds also keen on considering a deal.

Colback has endured a miserable time at St James’ Park lately. The 28-year-old is yet to make an appearance for the Magpies first-team this season and has had to settle for getting game-time with the under-23s.

Unsurprisingly, TEAMtalk reports that Newcastle are keen to offload the versatile midfielder next month, and a host of second tier clubs are keen to offer him a fresh start – including Bristol City, Leeds and Derby.

TEAMtalk reports that his wages may mean that a loan move is necessary in January if Newcastle want to get him off the books, but Sunderland are also ready to try and win the race for his signature.

The news that the Black Cats want to bring Colback back to the Stadium of Light is surely unlikely to go down well with the club’s supporters as his relationship was probably left in tatters by his decision to join their bitter rivals on a free transfer three years ago.

And with Colback’s lack of game-time meaning that they will probably not even be able to trust that he will be able to help them keep themselves out of trouble this year, it would appear that he would have a mountain to climb if he wanted to win the fans over if a surprise move did take place.
