The Black Cats have little to no support for Jermain Defoe with Borini’s absence.

Sunderland manager David Moyes is considering several free agent options to boost his attack in the wake of Fabio Borini’s injury, including the likes of Victor Anichebe, Dimitar Berbatov, and Niklas Bendtner, according to the Chronicle.

Moyes signed five players this summer after being appointed as the replacement for new England manager Sam Allardyce at the Stadium of Light.

However, none of those new arrivals were attackers, leaving the Black Cats with just prolific top scorer Jermain Defoe, former Liverpool man Borini, and 17-year-old prospect Joel Asoro as registered attackers.

Now they have been dealt a cruel blow upon the close of the transfer window as it was announced that Borini is likely to miss three months of the season with a serious thigh injury.

That effectively leaves all of the club’s attacking hopes on Defoe’s shoulders, and the Chronicle report that Moyes is now considering possible free transfer options to provide support for the man who turns 34 next month.

The paper claims that a leading candidate is Moyes’ former Everton striker Victor Anichebe, who was released by West Brom at the end of last season.

Other options being explored allegedly include ex-Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United maverick Dimitar Berbatov, much-maligned former Arsenal man Nicklas Bendtner, and former West Brom and Stoke man Peter Odemwingie, all of whom are currently without a club.

The Chronicle quotes Moyes as saying: “We worked incredibly hard all through the window to get a striker in. We had some things lined up, and they didn’t come off.

“We thought we would get someone in late, but unfortunately it didn’t happen. So we may now have to go and look at an alternative, someone who can give us something either coming off the bench or as back-up.”
