The Black Cats are after a new manager after Jack Ross left the Stadium of Light.
Reported Sunderland managerial top target Gareth Ainsworth is also being courted by Millwall, according to a report by Sky Sports News.
The Black Cats are on the hunt for a new manager following the recent departure of Jack Ross and The Telegraph has claimed that the Wycombe boss is their number one option for the Stadium of Light hotseat.
According to Sky Sports News, however, the Lions – themselves managerless following Neil Harris’ exit from the Championship club – also want to speak to Ainsworth after the excellent job he has done during seven years at Adams Park.
The report claims that Sunderland were granted permission to speak to Ainsworth earlier this week, the Chairboys determined not to stand in the 46-year-old’s way should he wish to move on, but with the 2004 FA Cup finalists and potentially also Reading in the hunt for his services, it may not be as straightforward for the Black Cats.
With Gary Rowett and Wigan’s Paul Cook seemingly uninterested in the Sunderland role and Coventry’s Mark Robins penning a new deal with the West Midlands club, the names still in the hat include Ainsworth, Bolton’s Phil Parkinson (The Sun) and ex-player Kevin Phillips, who has expressed his interest in the job (Sunderland Echo).
Sunderland are currently sat in sixth place in the League One table, after taking 19 points from 11 games so far.
