That need has been exacerbated by Josh Maja’s exit, with the club’s top goalscorer moving on to French side Bordeaux just days ago, with two strikers ow needed.
Sky Sports report that Sunderland are now closing in on a pair of strikers, with Grigg believed to be one of the forwards closing in on a move to Wearside.
It’s claimed that Sunderland have failed with four bids for Grigg, but now appear to be closing in on his signature with a fifth offer for the Wigan striker.
Grigg, 27, has hit just four goals in 17 games for Wigan this season, but his record in League One is remarkable, with 64 goals in his last three League One campaigns.
Landing the Northern Ireland international would be a major boost to Sunderland’s promotion hopes, and they may feel that landing a proven League One striker will get them over the line.
It remains to be seen who the other striker heading to Sunderland is, but tying up a deal for Grigg appears to be the priority ahead of Thursday’s deadline.
