Sunderland are hoping to bolster their options by signing David Cotterill who recently left their Championship rivals.
Chris Coleman’s men currently find themselves in a perilous position in the Championship. Following their defeat to Barnsley on New Year’s Day, the Black Cats are second-bottom in the table, two points ahead of the Blues and two points off safety.
January therefore, is an absolutely vital month for the club, and the fans will undoubtedly be hoping to see some new faces arrive through the door before the deadline comes.
One player who Coleman hopes to bring to the Stadium of Light is Cotterill, according to the Echo. The 30-year-old is without a club after leaving St Andrew’s in December, and Coleman is well aware of his ability, having managed him on a number of occasions when he was in charge of the Wales national team.
Though Cotterill may not reflect too fondly on his final months with Birmingham, signing him would appear to be a very smart move from the Black Cats.
Judging by their summer activity, it may not be a surprise if Coleman does not have a particularly significant transfer kitty to work with, so the opportunity to land an experienced player for nothing is surely one that would appeal to the Sunderland boss.
