Sunderland and two of their Championship rivals are eyeing up a bargain move for Wigan Athletic defender Donervon Daniels.

According to a report from The Sun, Sunderland are planning to take on Norwich City and Cardiff City in the summer in the race to sign Donervon Daniels from Wigan Athletic.

Daniels has just returned from a loan move away from the Latics at League One rivals Rochdale. And despite their struggles this term – they are currently second-bottom, nine points off safety, though they have played as many as five fewer games as the teams around them – Daniels had impressed and was recalled by Paul Cook.

However, The Sun reports that the Wigan boss was not the only one whose eye has been caught by the 24-year-old with the Black Cats, Canaries and Bluebirds all considering a move when his contract expires at the end of the season.

The Sun adds that the promotion-chasers would like to agree a new deal with the defender. But he would be forgiven for wanting to consider his options if the three second tier sides come calling.

Where should Daniels go?

If Daniels plays regularly between now and the end of the season and Wigan secure the automatic-promotion that they are on course to bag, staying at the DW Stadium should definitely appeal to the former West Brom trainee.

Similarly, if Sunderland manage to keep themselves up, a move to the Stadium of Light should prove tempting as they, right now, seem to be the team that would be able to offer Daniels the most first-team football if he did leave.

Norwich look destined to spend at least one more season in the Championship as things stand. The Canaries are eight points off the top six, and the bottom three are so far in their peripheral vision that battling relegation is not an issue that they should even be contemplating. They have a decent cluster of defenders already however, so moving to Carrow Road may not be the best idea if securing first-team football is his main concern.

As for Cardiff, they are most definitely in the promotion race. And if they go up, a potential move to a Premier League club may be difficult for Daniels to turn down if Neil Warnock comes calling. Warnock thrives on getting the best out of players, so a move to the Cardiff City Stadium would surely be difficult for most in the lower leagues to reject if the chance presented itself.
