According to a report from the Daily Mirror, Sunderland boss Chris Coleman may be handed the chance to stay in the Championship next season with Ipswich Town keen on luring him away from the Stadium of Light.

The Tractor Boys are currently on the lookout for their next manager after former Black Cats man Mick McCarthy left the club ahead of the end of the campaign after six years at Portman Road.

The Mirror reports that they have had some difficulty recruiting their next boss, with Nigel Pearson and Tony Mowbray not keen on the post and Luton Town boss Nathan Jones proving too expensive a target despite the gap between the two clubs.

That has led them to have a serious look at former Wales boss Coleman, who was unable to keep Sunderland up this term. The Mirror suggests that there is plenty of uncertainty over the 47-year-old’s future with the Black Cats, and he will be seeking assurances over his summer budget before he commits to stick around.

Given the problems that several Sunderland bosses have faced over the last few years, it seems fair to say that Coleman’s stock has not exactly fallen dramatically since he made the brave move to swap Wales for the Stadium of Light. But he must surely realise that he may not be so lucky if the club cannot threaten to make their stay in League One a brief one.

Ipswich have hardly been flash when it comes to transfer fees either over the years, but the foundations look a lot more stable from the outside, so news of their interest is bound to catch Coleman’s attention.
