The Black Cats have been linked with the Blades defender, who starred for Blackpool in League One last season, but Reading are also reportedly keen.

Sunderland have been linked with a move Sheffield United defender Ben Heneghan but face competition from Reading, according to a Sky Sports News report.
The 25-year-old signed for the Blades in 2017 after a spell at Motherwell but has made just one senior appearance for the club and spent last season on loan at Blackpool.
With United now in the Premier League, Heneghan appears even more surplus to Chris Wilder’s requirements and Sky Sports Transfer Centre (17/7/19, 13:45), the centre-back is on the radar of the Black Cats and the Royals.
The report does claim that the two sides have only made initial enquiries at this stage, but as far as transfer rumours go, this one seems plausible, given his current situation and who he is being linked with.

Heneghan, who stands at 1.91m (6ft 3in), made 42 appearances in League One last season as Blackpool finished a creditable 10th in the table and shipped a relatively low 52 goals in the 46 league games.
With Sunderland very much in need of a no-nonsense centre-back who is proven at that level to help shore up their defence amid the rough and tumble of the third tier, the £450,000-valued player (Transfermarkt) certainly seems like a good fit for the Black Cats at present.
