Simon Grayson, Manager of Sunderland looks on prior to the Carabao Cup Third Round match between Everton and Sunderland at Goodison Park on September 20, 2017 in Liverpool, England.

According to reports from The Sunday People (printed edition; October 1st – page 46), Championship clubs Sunderland and Middlesbrough are showing keen interest in signing Hartlepool’s young midfielder Josh Hawkes.

The 18-year-old spent some time at Boro as a boy, but has been making remarkable progress over the last 12 months at Hartlepool.

The report claims that Hawkes is angling a big move away from Victoria Park in January.

Hawkes plays as an attacking midfielder. He was drafted in to the first team picture earlier this year, after he impressed Dave Jones when playing for the reserves.

He has an uncanny knack of arriving late in to the penalty area to score goals. Plus, he is capable of producing superb set-piece deliveries and is dangerous with direct free-kicks as well.

Hawkes made his senior debut as a substitute against Crewe Alexandra in February 2017, and went on to sign his first professional contract at the club.

A move to either Sunderland or Boro will be massive for his career, and Hartlepool could be willing to let him go if they get right price for the youngster.
