Liverpool defender Sebastian Coates impressed during his loan spell at Sunderland this season.
Sunderland will attempt to sign Sebastian Coates from Liverpool this summer, according to a report in the Sunderland Echo.
The Black Cats took Coates on loan this season and they are reported to have been impressed enough with his performances to feel that he could be a good addition on a long-term basis.
Coates is likely to be put up for sale by Liverpool, as he seems a long way down the pecking order at Anfield, and Sunderland are set to lodge a bid.
That comes as a slight surprise, as Coates struggled so badly over his initial spell at the Stadium of Light.
| Total Tackle | Outfielder Block | Total Clearance | Duel Won | Aerial Won | Interception | Appearances | Mins Played | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sebastián Coates | 27 | 10 | 50 | 59 | 20 | 33 | 10 | 822 |
Coates took a while to get going on Wearside, but his displays towards the end of the campaign – which helped the side avoid relegation out of the Premier League – have convinced Sunderland that he would be a good addition.
If Coates does make his temporary spell at Sunderland a more permanent one in the near future, he is likely to be one of a number of new signings made by the club.
Sunderland realise that they need to make a number of alterations to their first-team squad, with a host of new signings expected to be made in the coming months.
