A report in the Shields Gazette has suggested that both Vurnon Anita and Yoan Gouffran are keen to extend their contracts at Newcastle following the club’s promotion to the Premier League – though the latter may have to agree to a compromise.
One year after the Magpies’ relegation meant that they went into the summer with so many questions to answer with a number of players’ futures, as well as the future of Rafa Benitez, up in the air, Newcastle go into the coming months seemingly with a much calmer situation at St James’ Park.
Gouffran and Anita are the two senior players out of contract, and the Shields Gazette reports that the Championship winners plan to turn their attention to their situations with a deal for loanee Christian Atsu already in the pipeline.
The Shields Gazette reports that the pair are both keen to stay, with Anita especially willing to stick around having become a key player with Benitez in charge.

Meanwhile, the Shields Gazette suggests that Gouffran’s situation may be more complicated as Newcastle may be hesitant to offer the 30-year-old the length of deal that he may be looking for.
While both men contributed during their title-winning season, it would hardly be a surprise if supporters wanted the club to avoid breaking the bank in an attempt to keep either man.
Both players may perhaps thrive at the highest level being a part of this much-changed side that Benitez has constructed, but it is fair to point out that neither particularly shone in the Magpies’ previous spell in the top flight so seeing them leave would probably not be deemed too great a setback for the club.
